Wir tragen die Räume in uns, in denen wir gelebt haben. Etwas bleibt in Räumen zurück, nachdem der Körper sie verlassen hat. Etwas bleibt im Körper zurück, nachdem der Raum verschwunden ist. Der Körper nimmt diese Dinge in sich auf, verschmilzt mit ihnen und bewegt sich in ihnen zwischen Anwesenheit und Abwesenheit.
still, not still versammelt zwei künstlerische Positionen, die danach fragen, was es bedeutet, in Räumen zu existieren, die niemals einfach gegeben sind, sich durch Umgebungen zu bewegen, die vertraut wirken und dennoch in einem wesentlichen Sinne fremd bleiben. Die Werke oszillieren zwischen dem Zweidimensionalen und dem Räumlichen, zwischen der Oberfläche, die eine Welt trägt, und der Struktur, die sie hervorbringt.
Sophia Ashraf arbeitet aus der Beobachtung heraus und bewegt sich zwischen Innen und Außen, zwischen Oberflächen, Kanten und dem Licht alltäglicher Umgebungen. Ihre Kompositionen sind bewusst reduziert, nicht um zu vereinfachen, sondern um das Konstruierte lesbar zu machen. Vertraute Räume gewinnen eine subtile Fremdheit. Die Atmosphäre schwebt zwischen Intimität und Künstlichkeit, zwischen dem Wiedererkannten und dem leicht Befremdlichen.
Eight Fang arbeitet von innen heraus, aus den Systemen, die Raum organisieren. Die Arbeit löst die Unterscheidung zwischen Körper und Objekt, zwischen Organismus und Struktur nicht auf. Sie hält beides in einer produktiven Nähe, jedes durch die Gegenwart des anderen verändert. Aus einer diasporischen Erfahrung heraus bewohnt die Arbeit eine fremde Einsamkeit, den Zustand eines Körpers, der nie vollständig angekommen ist.
Jede Position findet ihren eigenen Zugang. Sophia Ashraf arbeitet vorwiegend mit Malerei und erkundet ihre Umgebung und räumliche Wahrnehmung durch reduzierte Kompositionen aus Farbe, Fläche und Licht. Eight Fang arbeitet mit Installation und Malerei und folgt einem modularen System als materielle Sprache und kritischem Rahmen, in dem die tragende Struktur selbst Teil der Arbeit wird und das System, das die Arbeit hält, zugleich ihr Gegenstand ist. In beiden Positionen ist Raum weder stabil noch neutral. Er wird konstruiert, wahrgenommen und verinnerlicht, als gebauter Raum, als sozialer Raum, als digitaler Raum. still, not still beschreibt diesen Schwebezustand: weder vollständig still noch in Bewegung, sondern den Moment dazwischen, in dem die Dinge fortbestehen. Wo Langsamkeit die einzige Form von Intimität wird und das Vertraute immer gerade noch außer Reichweite bleibt.

We carry the spaces we have lived in. Something persists in spaces after the body has left. Something persists in the body after the space is gone. The body absorbs these things, merges with them, shifts between presence and absence within them. still, not still brings together two practices that ask what it means to exist inside spaces that are never simply given, to move through environments that feel familiar yet remain, in some essential way, foreign. The works oscillate between the two-dimensional and the spatial, between the surface that holds a world and the structure that produces it.
Sophia Ashraf works from observation, moving between interior and exterior, between the surfaces, edges, and light of everyday environments. Her compositions are deliberately reduced, not to simplify, but to make the constructed legible. Familiar spaces acquire a subtle wrongness. The atmosphere hovers between intimacy and artificiality, between the recognized and the slightly estranged.
Eight Fang works from within the systems that organize space. The work does not resolve the distinction between body and object, organism and structure. It holds them in proximity, each altered by the nearness of the other. Drawn from a diasporic experience, the work inhabits a foreign solitude, the condition of a body that has never fully arrived.
Each practice finds its own entry point. Sophia Ashraf works primarily through painting, exploring her surroundings and spatial perception through reduced compositions of color, surface, and light. Eight Fang works with installation and painting, following a modular system as both material language and critical framework, in which the underlying structure becomes part of the work itself, and the system that holds the work is also what the work is about. Across both practices, space is neither stable nor neutral. It is constructed, sensed, and internalized, whether as built space, social environment, or digital space. still, not still describes that suspended state. Neither fully still nor in motion, but the moment between the two where things persist. Where slowness becomes the only form of intimacy, and the familiar always remains just out of reach.
